Tips / Safety

If you’ve shopped for a late summer or fall vacation on the East Coast, you’ve likely noticed something. Travel prices are really reduced from August until the holidays in many destinations, mainly thanks to hurricane season.

When there’s a chance of a storm canceling your trip, some travelers shy away from booking a trip at all, meaning demand and travel rates are down. While this is great for bargain-hunting travelers or those who have traveled along the East Coast or in the Caribbean during hurricane season many times in the past with no problem, that doesn’t mean you’ll always be in the clear. All it takes is one poorly timed storm to wipe out your vacation plans.

While you can’t stop a hurricane, you can eliminate some of the frustration that comes with cancellations or delays by purchasing travel insurance. Purchasing travel insurance allows you to get some of what you paid for your vacation, back — and Berkshire Hathaway indicates this may be the year you want to invest in travel insurance if you haven’t before. In a recent release from Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection, the company noted this upcoming hurricane season, 2022–2023, has a 65 percent chance of becoming an above-normal season (in terms of storm activity) and there’s a 75 percent chance at least one major hurricane will impact the U.S. coast.

So, do you need travel insurance this hurricane season? If so, start exploring your trip protection options now rather than later. You can find travel insurance that reimburses you for interruptions, delays, missed connections, cancellations and more, and Berkshire Hathaway even offers a cruise-specific travel insurance option if that’s your preferred way to travel.
