Seoul is not only the political, but financial capital of South Korea, largely due to the growth of their information technology and electronics industries. The city has built one of the most technologically advanced infrastructures in the world, featuring an extensive fiber-optic network with speeds up to 1 Gbps, as well as free public WiFi in outdoor spaces, perfect for relaxing by Cheonggyecheon Stream or stopping by a café in Hongdae.
Gadget-friendly travelers interested in Seoul’s tech industry should consider a stop at Samsung D’Light, the company’s three-story exposition room showcasing their history, current product line and future technologies. Like an Apple Store on steroids, D’Light features interactive exhibits as well as a storefront to purchase their latest gadgets. Admission is free, but the price tags in the store tend to be a little higher than traditional electronics stores.
While you’re in Seoul, be sure to try a sip of makgeolli, the traditional drink of Korea. The alcoholic beverage is usually made from rice mixed with nuruk, resulting in a fizzy, sweet concoction with an alcohol content of 5 to 8 percent. Each drink is unique to its region and ingredients, and there are hundreds of makgeolli bars around Seoul.
Wolhyang offers a fresh take on the beverage, utilizing brown rice and organic ingredients served in a trendy, café-like bar, starting at around $3 a bottle. Food stylist Haeri Park says their makgeolli has double the alcohol content of most other places, but the fresh and organic properties prevent hangovers. For a more traditional approach, check out Hongdae landmark, Chin Chin, marked by their empty bottles hanging in the patio. Bring a group of friends and order the Five Tasting Menu to get the equivalent of 20 shots for $25.
