Staying Safe in Mexico City

Safety

Mexico City is a great place to visit, but it does have areas where crime is an issue. It’s important to make smart decisions so you don’t end up in situations you might regret.

Choose Visible ATMs

If you find yourself short on money and need to withdraw, make sure you choose an ATM in a popular place like a mall. Taking money out in a desolate area can lead to disaster and an old-fashioned mugging.

Call for a Cab

As in, literally pick up the phone and call a taxi service or have the hotel do it for you. It’s a known fact there are people in the city who will pose as cab drivers in order to rob or harm tourists, so make sure you’re always hopping into a reputable car service.

Keep Your Wallet in Your Front Pocket

It’s harder for a pickpocket to steal your wallet if it’s in your front pocket, as you’re more likely to feel and see it happening. Keep all valuables out of back pockets and pockets in your jacket or coat that might be easy to reach into.

Don’t Get Drunk in Public

Drinking leads to lower inhibition and inhibits your awareness of your surroundings. You certainly don’t want to get lost and stumble down the wrong side street because you had a little too much to drink.

Don’t Look Like a Tourist

Store the camera in a bag or backpack rather than around your neck and leave the flip-flops at home. Looking too much like a tourist will just make you a target.
