History

History fans, listen up. Medieval castles and Renaissance Fairs may offer a glimpse into history, but for those who want to see tradition at play in the modern world, the Island of Sark needs to be your next vacation spot. This small island in the English Channel is a fiefdom, governed by Norman law and offering a window into living history.

Sark has seen a lot for a small island. Whether it’s conquering Romans, Normans or Germans during WWII, Sark played host to various invaders over the years. It also served as a pirate outpost and was the last feudal state in Europe, and in 1990 survived a rogue Frenchman’s attempt to invade the tiny island. Churches, language and culture now stand as reminders of the various adventures in the life of Sark, adding up to a fascinating and charmingly unique experience.

Approachable only by boat, Sark can be traveled by bicycle, foot, tractor or horse-and-carriage. The island is known for gorgeous historic homes and breathtaking scenery, including views of the English Channel. Tourists are welcome on Sark, and a number of hotels and B&Bs are in operation. But don’t expect too much modern convenience; part of the charm of Sark is that it offers a break from the hustle and bustle.

One of the natural wonders beloved on Sark is the night sky. With minimal pollution and little light, the sky above Sark offers a gorgeous view of the stars. It’s a novelty city-dwellers will find particularly charming. In addition, dolphins can sometimes be seen off the coast, and hiking is available for those who want to explore the green island.

Sark may not be the perfect place for those looking to party on vacation, but if getting away from it all and exploring an obscure part of history sounds fun, then Sark is a great place to get away from the crowds. Learn more at sark.co.uk.
