Tips / Travel

Many travelers make the mistake of assuming they’ll be covered by their personal auto insurance if they rent a car overseas. This is rarely the case. In fact, if you plan on using a rental, it’s important to do your research before you go.

Credit Card Insurance

Check with your credit card company to see if they offer what’s referred to as “secondary insurance,” which can occasionally cover car rentals in other countries. American Express and Visa tend to provide the best coverage

Other Options

If your credit car company doesn’t provide insurance, check out other options like Protect Your Bubble, which offers coverage for a small daily rate. Some travelers have also had success obtaining coverage through companies like AAA. Many of the top automobile insurance companies, like Geico and Progressive, also offer overseas coverage for an additional price, but always check to make sure the country your traveling to is under their umbrella.

Don’t Get Suckered

Rental agents overseas are often told to push expensive collision/damage waivers. These aren’t actually insurance plans and can end up costing you extra by denying you coverage for accidents. Always have your insurance needs covered before you get to the rental place; never purchase insurance there if you can avoid it. Similarly, remember to bring documented proof of your coverage or they might not let you take the car.
