The rise of Airbnb, couch surfing and hostels makes travel more affordable, but also leaves an element of personal safety in question. Protecting yourself on the road isn’t as simple as locking a hotel room door and calling it a day. And you really never know who has keys to your room or how well your locks work.

Add another layer of protection to your travels with a travel door alarm and some simple tricks to safeguard your personal safety and valuables. If you’re on a budget, a simple rubber door wedge is easy to pack and just slides under your door before kicking it into place. The wedge makes breaking in difficult, if not impossible, without arousing suspicion.

Pair your door wedge with a travel door alarm to scare away thieves and alert you to an intrusion. Take your pick of options like Lewis N Clark Travel Door Alarm and Window Guard that uses thin blades to slide between the door and doorframe. Just loop the cord around the door handle, set the device and it sets off a high-pitched 91 dB of sound when triggered. Or buy a two-pack of the EMDARK Door Stop Alarm that works like a door wedge, making it difficult for thieves to enter. When triggered, the alarm triggers a 120 db alarm you can set to high, medium or low. Most door wedges and travel door alarms are inexpensive and effectively deter intrusions, or at least alert you to suspicious activity.

Remember to keep your devices charged and know how to call for help when traveling abroad. Use your current locks, stay proactive to your safety and combine security devices to rest easy on your next adventure.
