In addition to helping travelers find what they’re looking for once in their destination, Apple Maps now assists users of the app with an earlier step in the travel process. This new feature — introduced as part of the iOS 11 update — can provide maps of select airport terminals, making it easier for users to find gates, the next Starbucks and the nearest restroom while in motion before a flight.
When zooming in on an airport’s location using Apple Maps of the past, a simple grey box would appear indicating the location of the airport, but, with the new update, users will be able to view labeled terminals and precise indoor locations of stores, food courts, security checkpoints and airport lounges. Tapping a restaurant’s location will take you a step further as an information box will appear on screen and inform users of the type of cuisine and a few user reviews.
Currently the feature offers maps of 10 airport terminals, including Chicago O’Hare, Baltimore-Washington International Airport, Miami International Airport and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, among others, with more added in the future, such as Los Angeles International Airport and New York JFK and LaGuardia Airport. There are plans to expand to overseas airports, as well.
Not only does this indoor maps feature benefit travelers who can now view the inner details of airports, but users also can view other indoor layouts for public buildings such as shopping malls.
