The ACL 2016 Music Festival returns to Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, this weekend. For more than a decade, music lovers have been traveling from all over the world to the heart of Texas for one of the greatest outdoor music festivals in the country. ACL has continued to grow with star-studded line-ups on eight stages of diverse artists entertaining 450,000 like-minded individuals. 2016’s lineup will definitely not disappoint with more than 130 bands under the Texas stars.
The roots of the ACL can be traced back to the TV series broadcast by PBS. The show was initially created to celebrate the music of Texas, plus its singers and songwriters. The pilot in 1976 featured Willie Nelson, also part of the 2016 lineup. Austin City Limits is the longest-running music program in television history, and helped Austin to become known as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” This laid the groundwork and foundation for the start of the festival in 2002. Austin City Limits Festival has had an array of artists — too many to list — and it gets bigger and keeps evolving.
Headlining the 2016 festival will be Radiohead, LCD Soundsystem, Kendrick Lamar and Mumford & Sons. Other artists include Maren Morris, Kacey Musgraves, LL Cool J featuring J Trip, Margo Price, Cage the Elephant, Pete Horn, Nathaniel Rateliff and the Night Sweats, Aubrie Sellers, Amanda Shires and LANCO, among many, many others. Late-night shows have been added to the lineup this year .
If you’re going to the Austin City Music Festival this year, they have added more shaded areas, and official rosters on the ACL to download so you can manage what bands you want to see. If you’re unable to make it to Austin this year, Red Bull is live-streaming this amazing festival.
