Safety

Soak up the summer sun without ending up like a lobster. There are many ways to enjoy the beach while staying safe in the sun. Follow these simple precautions to protect your skin.

It almost goes without saying but sunscreen is non-negotiable. Look for oil-free sunscreens to avoid breakouts and clogged pores. Apply a liberal amount — about a shot glass full — 15 minutes before heading outside and remember to reapply throughout the day. Even if your sunscreen is waterproof, apply a new coat after swimming.

Don’t forget the SPF-enhanced lip balm. Lips are often overlooked and are just as susceptible to sunburn as other parts of the body.

Find some shade or make your own. Beach umbrellas provide a great shelter from the sun and floppy sunhats give you personal, portable shade.

Don’t forget the sunglasses. Skin isn’t the only thing that can suffer from overexposure to the sun’s rays. Protect your peepers with a polarized pair of sunglasses and save yourself from squinting into the sunset.

Consider SPF-enhanced clothing, such as rash guards, swimsuits, sundresses or hats if you’re a frequent beach-goer. While these products are more expensive than their ordinary counterparts, the extra protection is worth the investment.

Enjoy the beach and stay sun-safe!
