Tips / Travel

Traveling internationally or to a popular tourist destination can open up a world of scams and rip-off experiences. Every city has them, both locally and abroad, to try to avoid tourist traps and upcharges with a few helpful tips.

Read the Reviews

People will hand you flyers on the street and tell you all sorts of fairytales about amazing local experiences, restaurants, shops and activities, but be sure to do some research of your own.

Before paying high prices for some local attraction or must-see tourist destination, make sure you check online first and see what the fuss is about. If you don’t have WiFi, check in with the locals — specifically those who don’t stand to profit from your ticket purchase.

Avoid Gift Shops

Definitely bring something home to remember your trip, but just don’t get it from a gift shop. Take your time collecting mementos and don’t feel pressure to get it accomplished in one place — especially a store specifically designed to profit from tourists.

Most items are made in another country and will not stand the test of time. Save your money, take a ton of photos and hold out for a local mom-and-pop shop or street vendor on an off-street that catches your eye.
