Tips / Destination

France is beloved for its beautiful scenery and rich history, not least of which the numerous castles dotting the landscape. It’s hard to choose which ones are the most striking, but we think these stand out as the most awe-inspiring in the country.

Mont Saint-Michel

Mont Saint-Michel is a fortress 600 meters off the coast of Normandy that has stood tall against the skyline since ancient times. More than 3 million visitors flock to the castle each year and judging by the look of it, it’s easy to see why. If there were ever a castle that inspired a Disney movie, it’s this one.

Château d’Angers

The actual castle of Château d’Angers is not the largest in existence, but it’s the walls protecting it that truly make it shine. These seemingly impenetrable structures line the castle on three sides — the fourth protected by water — and contain within the most spectacular collection of medieval art in the country, possibly the world.

Château de Chambord

Château de Chambord is a prime example of extravagance that the French were once known for and today remains one of the most impressive structures in the world. Construction originally began in the 16th century but was abandoned by the French Revolution. The Renaissance architecture and impressive collection of art within led to it being named a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Palace of Versailles

While possibly the most famous castle in France, the Palace of Versailles leaves much to be desired from the outside. Inside, however, it’s truly a work of art. It was originally designed as a hunting lodge but was turned into the seat of the monarchy during the reign of Louis XIV. Its famous Hall of Mirrors was the site of many historical moments of significance and today remains one of the most easily recognizable locations in the world.
