Bergmönch by Koga has taken the mountain hiking experience and revolutionized it into something completely different. Likewise, mountain biking is an entirely new experience with the Bergmönch as well. The name literally means “mountain-monk” and, at first, it’s not entirely apparent as to why.
Explained simply, the Bergmönch is a lightweight, compact, foldable mountain bike. Meant to be worn on hikers’ backs going up the mountain, it can then be easily unfolded for a quick trip down the other side. The only thing is — there’s no seat. The Bergmönch is designed so that the rider kneels — like a monk — while traveling over smooth terrain, and stands when going over rough terrain so as to retain balance. The kneeling and standing downhill rather than biking or even walking are intended to be both more comfortable and safer. The device’s website says this new way of mountain hiking will unleash a multitude of possibilities for both experienced and novice hikers alike, as it will allow them to go further distances without becoming fatigued, while opening up new hiking routes that were previously thought too advanced for novice hikers.
While the Bergmönch is an inventive idea and could become a valuable asset to hikers all over the world in the future, it may be a while before you see them pop up at your local sporting goods store. The Bergmönch is still in production and only a limited number have been produced, and, in addition, they’re also selling for a hefty $1,499 before shipping.
