Tips / Destination

The arts are a major focus for the socialist government in Cuba, and there are plenty of galleries where you can see the work of Cuban artists.

One of the top spots is the Centro de Arte Contemporaneo Wilfredo Lam, named after one of the best-known Cuban artists in history. Keep an eye out for the Havana Art Biennial, organized by the gallery.

Another artistic institution is the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. One building houses works by Cuban artists, and the other by international artists. There is a regular program of temporary exhibitions too.

At the Fototeca de Cuba, the focus is on photography. Since 1986 the space has been organizing photography exhibitions, but November is the best time to visit as the yearly colloquium is on.

If contemporary art is your thing, Servando Art Gallery is the place to be. The space focuses on showing works by emerging artists from the island, and names to watch include Alejandro Campins, Lazaro Saavedra and Luis Enrique Lopez-Chavez.

Another space that gives exposure to young artists is the Centro de Desarrollo de las Artes Visuales . It’s easy to find on the Old Square in Old Havana, and there are two main events to watch out for: Salon de Premiados and the Contemporary Cuban Art Salon.

If art is your thing, you’re spoiled for choice in Havana. Check out these spots to find out more about the latest artistic developments on the island.
