Tips / Destination

Portland is known for its quirky personality, local charm and cultural offerings — experience it all in some of the city’s best bookstores.

Powell’s City of Books is one of the city’s top attractions, occupying an entire city block in the Pearl District. The store has more than 3,500 sections, 2 million books and it hosts more than 500 author events a year. While boasting such big numbers, its staff is helpful and always able to offer personalized recommendations. In short, Powell’s is a book-lovers paradise.

Annie Bloom’s Books is an independent bookseller and local favorite. It offers a cozy atmosphere, a great Indie selection, weekly author events and detailed staff favorites if you’re looking for your next great read.

Independent and locally owned Broadway Books greatly supports local authors and sells everything from new and used books to e-books and small, literary-themed gifts.

New Renaissance Bookshop, located on NW 23rd Street, is a quirky, eclectic shop selling books, DVDs, spiritual items, Eastern medicine products, décor, teapots and accessories, jewelry and more.

Located in the industrial district, Mother Foucault Bookshop specializes in used, rare and vintage books, vinyl and more. They also have a no internet policy, so don’t expect to bring your laptop to get work done. The shop is a space for paper (and vinyl) alone.

Located in southeast Portland, Wallace Books is another quirky shop located in an inviting yellow and blue house. It’s bursting with books and offers a relaxed vibe, engaged staff and great vintage collection, as well as good sales if you follow its Facebook page.
