Suriname is a melting pot of different cultures, resulting in an eclectic country as diverse in its people as it is in its food, architecture and natural resources. To get a taste of everything it has to offer, try visiting these popular cities and towns.
Paramaribo
Paramaribo is the capital and largest city of Suriname, and no place better exemplifies the country’s vast diversity. It’s a food lover’s paradise with incredible cuisine from all over the world, a cosmopolitan appeal, and is the starting point for just about every trip you can take in the country.
Lelydorp
Lelydorp is not far outside of Paramaribo and boasts a predominately Javanese population. The large village offers one of the best pottery markets in Suriname and is an all-around great place to discover local crafts. It’s also somewhat surprisingly a fantastic place to dine on Indonesian street food thanks to an influx of immigrants in the region.
Nieuw Nickerie
Nieuw Nickerie is the country’s third-largest city. The port town is often a stopping point before crossing the border into Guyana. However, the delightful city offers an old-world charm that feels more authentic than its larger sisters. Since so many travelers pass through here you can find restaurants catering to just about any taste alongside excellent markets and shops. It’s also the starting point to explore Bigi Pan, home to hundreds of caimans, ibises and more than 100 species of birds.
