Benin’s largest city is both the economic and cultural capital of the country. As a port city, Cotonou also has access to some of the most exotic and delicious spices, making it a standout when it comes to Africa’s burgeoning foodie scene. Here are a few restaurants that stand out.
Le Prive is a beautifully decorated, upscale restaurant located in the heart of Cotonou, adjacent to the Cathedral. French cuisine is the focal point of the menu, though you’ll find a variety of international options. An exquisite setting combined with truly delectable food is why Le Prive is often booked a month in advance.
L’Imprevu is a highlight in Cotonou thanks to its modern, relaxed atmosphere and wonderful Italian and Thai pasta dishes. Though you’ll find touches of European and African influence in every dish, the noodles are where this restaurant really shines.
This unassuming little shack by the sea might just be one of the best-hidden treasures in Cotonou. With daily access to the freshest fish, you can rest assured all of the seafood options are top notch, though you can’t go wrong with some wine and wood-fired pizza here, either.
La Maree de Jaelle is another happening seafood joint that offers a quiet atmosphere, with only four tables, and exquisite lobster and crab dinners. Sitting through a three-course meal here feels like dining with family and it’s the perfect place to unwind after a long day.
Pili Pili is the place to go for an authentic African dining experience in Cotonou. This rustic eatery serves up delicious pili pili chicken along with local favorites like lamb and spinach stew and grilled fish served fresh. Just watch out for the mosquitoes when eating outside at night!
