A popular, year-round destination for outdoor enthusiasts, Washington is a fall fanatic’s dream come true thanks to vibrant leaves, scenic drives, food trails and more to enjoy the cooler and colorful season. Plan a fall trip to Washington and embark on these experiences to get the most out of your visit:
Scenic Drives and Byways
The state can’t be limited to just a few scenic drives, but there are some that, if you’re limited on time, promise exceptional sights. At White Pass Scenic Byway, you’ll weave through the Yakima Valley for 120 miles, with stops including Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helen’s and Gifford Pinchot National Forest. Meanwhile, Mount Baker Highway promises some of the finest views in Whatcom County, including Mount Shuksan reflected in Picture Lake. Or, opt for the Olympic Peninsula Loop, a drive wrapping around the peninsula and showcasing views of natural beauties like Hoh Rain Forest and Ruby Beach. Spot different salmon species as they return to the small tributaries of the Upper Quinault River.
Food Trails
Take on Skagit Food Trail, a self-guided journey through family-owned farms, local gardens, markets, bakeries, eateries, farm stays and more. The trail also offers experiences in Skagit River Valley and the Salish Sea, as well as a frolic through the flower fields. Taco junkies can’t miss the Taco & Tamale Trail in Yakima, a trail created with assistance from Central Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to highlight Hispanic-owned businesses, cultures and culinary traditions. On this trail, savor authentic flavors in every taco or tamale, as well as try new places or discover a new favorite.
Hikes, Hikes and More Hikes
One of the best states to enjoy a fall hike, Washington spoils locals and visitors with scenic outlooks and trails. Located off Chuckanut Drive in Skagit Valley, Samish Outlook and Oyster Dome is a great place to hike. Here, walk through Blanchard State Forest to see fall foliage where the Cascades meet the Salish Sea. If you’re closer to Yakima, Tieton River Nature Trail (7 miles total) boasts color-changing flora, including cottonwoods, shrubby willows and Garry oaks.
Charming Towns
As farmers begin to harvest the fruit of summer, a trip to the Tri-Cities allows you to explore the many wineries and breweries of the region to taste seasonal drinks. Don’t forget to try delicious dishes made by freshly harvested produce, either. Over on Kitsap Peninsula, this historic Victorian mill town is lined with maple trees and is great for leaf peeping and paranormal adventures. Take a ghost tour with Port Gamble Paranormal if you dare.
