You don’t need a textbook to learn a language. For many, it’s much easier to learn through real-life experiences, games and other methods, rather than the traditional ways of language learning.

Duolingo is a great on-the-go method to try if you want to learn a language in quick, short bursts, rather than a long, drawn-out lesson. With new words and grammar rules added as you go along, you’re given easy quizzes and games to complete to help you memorize your way to bilingualism.

For every language you want to learn, there’s someone out there who speaks it, and also happens to want to learn English. Check out sites like Interpals.com, where you can find speakers of almost any language to teach you in exchange for English lessons. Whether you decide to collaborate via email or Skype, it gives language-learning a more human, personal approach of private lessons, without the cost.

If you have some time on your hands, say, during your commute, a good option can be learning via podcast. Just download your choice and go, listening in the car or on your iPhone. Some are free, while some are not. Find what works best for you. User favorites include Language Pod 101, Radio Lingua and Survival Phrases. The latter is excellent even if you just want to brush up on common words and phrases before a trip to a foreign country, to make getting around a little easier.
