The Carnival of Venice, or Carneval di Venezia, opens with the Festa Veneziana Feb. 11. The Grand Opening ceremony is a must-see affair of dazzling lights, fireworks, music and costumes.
The second night continues as spectators look on from the banks of Cannaregio to watch ornate gondolas float down the canal. The boats are often themed on various Venetian specialties from fine wine, food, music and art. The Venetian feasts and local traditions of Carnival continue through the weekend and pave the way for the next 40 events to follow.
The Carnival continues through Feb. 28, filled with tradition, eccentric festivities and opulence. The parades marching through the streets celebrate the days before Lent and are followed by some of the most loved and extravagant balls. Guests dress up in ornate costumes and enjoy drinking, dancing, and masked fun before fasting for Lent.
The idea behind Carnival is to celebrate the old-world traditions of a bygone era, while indulging in fantasy and fun. The Carnival of Venice is one of the most sophisticated parties of its kind, while still being a roaring good time for locals and tourists alike.
