October is LGBT History Month in the United States. First celebrated in 1994, the celebration is intended to encourage honesty and openness about LGBT issues. It coincides with National Coming Out Day on Oct. 11.

The month-long annual observance recognizes the history of gay rights, the civil rights movement and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history. Each day during October, the LGBT History Month website highlights a different LGBT icon with a video, photos and biography commending their contributions to the cause. Last year’s icons included Frank Ocean, John Cameron Mitchell, Lee Daniels and Margaret Cho.

Resources for educators are available on the website. Schools are encouraged to host speakers and special events, include LGBT history in course work, distribute flyers or posters on campus and screen LGBT documentaries. It’s the perfect time to start a student group. Look for suggestions and guidelines on the Gay Straight Alliance Network website for starting an LGBT organization on your campus. GLAAD, the Human Rights Campaign, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Education Association and other organization endorse LGBT History Month.

Check in with the local LGBT organizations near you for events and celebrations in your area.
