Tips / Travel

Mardi Gras is the celebration period before the fasting season of Lent begins. It’s also one of the most popular worldwide events. While the event’s origins date back to medieval Europe, the tradition became so popular in New Orleans that the event has become synonymous with the city. Mardi Gras Day, also known as Fat Tuesday, occurs the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and serves as the kick off for festivities. If you can’t make it to the Crescent City, follow our tips for celebrating Mardi Gras from home.

  • Find Mardi Gras celebrations near you. Many major cities around the world host their own festivities ranging from parades to parties to concerts and everything in between.
  • Throw your own Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday party. Make sure you serve only the most iconic dishes to New Orleans including po’ boys, muffuletta, chargrilled oysters, gumbo and jambalaya. Mix up some classic New Orleans cocktails including a Sazerac, Hurricane or Ramos Gin Fizz.
  • Order famous treats ahead of time. Shop for coffee or beignet mix from Café du Monde. Sucré sells fresh-baked king cakes and other Mardi Gras desserts.
  • Get in the spirit by watching movies filmed in or about New Orleans. Watch Chef, The Big Easy or The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.
  • Play traditional New Orleans-style jazz music while reading books or articles about the city’s history.
