Think all bed and breakfasts are created equal? Think again. This quaint term refers to a range of hotel-like accommodations so it’s best to do your research before booking.
Most people think of bed and breakfasts as a traditional single-family house converted into a guest residence by the owner or a small company. The owners may or may not live in the residence and, contrary to the name, breakfast may not actually be included. Choose this kind of accommodation when you’re craving a homey, new environment and don’t mind getting cozy with other guests.
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway or more personal time with family and friends, opt for a bed and breakfast where the hosts don’t live in the residence. Choose places with separate cottages if possible or those with few guests.
After you think you’ve made the perfect decision, double-check your choice on the Internet. Look for reviews on third-party websites, but take other traveler’s tales with a grain of salt.
Finally, have a conversation with your host before you book and be clear about your expectations. Taking that extra step could save you from booking a bed and breakfast that ruins your vacation.
