It is that time of year again: Time for the annual Christmas market to burst onto the Chicago scene. For the last 22 years, on the Friday before Thanksgiving, a unique experience unfolds on Daley Plaza right in the middle of the Loop. Small huts are constructed and slowly decorated with Christmas cheer. A tree is put up and lights are strung around the plaza with care. If you do not know to expect this, you might emerge from the City Clerk’s office after paying a fine for something you did not realize existed only to have your grumpiness washed away by the sight of this tiny village.
This place is quaint and cozy. It is where people eat sausage and drink mulled wine while walking around looking at impressive artisanal goods. You want to live there, but know you can only afford to visit. The market is based on the Germanic tradition that is alive and well in central and eastern Europe today. Christmas presents abound in this seasonal land, anything from knitwear and ornaments to toys and pottery. There is something for almost everyone on your list. Daley Plaza is located at 50 West Washington St., in downtown Chicago and open Monday–Sunday through Christmas Eve. Admission is always free!
