One of the grandest Cinco de Mayo celebrations in the world occurs every year in Pueblo, Mexico. This celebration commemorates the Mexican militia’s victory over the first invasion of the well-equipped and large French army on May 5, 1862.

For 20 days and nights, locals and tourists celebrate with dancing, cultural arts, performances, live music and much more, all leading to the grand event May 5. Surrounding the celebration are thousands of stands selling local fare and arts and crafts as the locals celebrate in the streets.

On the last day of the event, May 5, a full military parade of students and authority personnel march for hours alongside colorful banners and floats. The parade is best viewed live from a nearby café or outdoor dining spot where tourists can casually watch the extended event comfortably.

While celebrating, visitors can walk through the city of Pueblo and admire the colonial town, colorful buildings, ceramic tile art and churches. The town center, the Plaza de Armas, is a scenic stop on a walk with benches and shaded trees for visitors to relax and take in the small town and its impressive cathedral towers.

Early May in Puebla is an explosion of fun, color and cultural expression through arts and dance, which may just be the best and most authentic way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.
