More students are turning to international institutions to earn their degree, whether undergraduate or advanced. The benefits vary, from gaining great experiences abroad to a much cheaper tuition cost, but knowing where to start is difficult. While most students are looking for the right college in the States, you have the entire world at your feet. Try starting with one of these countries, which can all offer unparalleled opportunities.

Germany is a top option for many American students, as the institutions are well respected and the tuition is generally free. In addition, most or all of the courses you need are available in English, as the German education system pushes its students to learn the language themselves.

Many students say Norway is a great option if you’re not looking to step too far away from your academic comfort zone. In some ways, the college experience is similar, with small classes and helpful professors. Many classes are in English and tuition is free. However, keep in mind Norway does have a high cost of living.

Currently a top tourist destination, Iceland is one country you may want to consider for your college education. Reykjavik’s University of Iceland does not charge tuition to Americans, though there is an annual registration fee. Post-graduate courses are available in English and living expenses (including accommodations) are affordable at less than $1,000 a month.

Many Swedish colleges offer free doctorate programs to American citizens and, yes, they’re in English. In addition, many will actually pay you for being in the program. Several of Sweden’s colleges make the world’s Top 100, including Lund University and KTH Royal Institute of Technology.
