Tipping after a meal is a custom embedded in American culture, and slighting a waiter even a couple percentage points below the usual 18 percent can be considered incredibly rude. In many countries this is not the case, and it is even seen as rude to tip at all. The service industry in some of these countries are seen as a respectable occupation that pays well and tips can be seen as a hand-out or charity. In order not to insult your waiter on your next trip, here is a list of some countries where tipping is seen as rude or not customary.
Japan
Tipping in Japan can be seen as rude and an insult, and may create confusion for waiters giving back change. Instead many restaurants will have “service charges” already included.
South Korea
Similar to Japan, tipping is actually considered rude and if you had excellent service they way to thank the staff is to come back for another meal.
China
As with its Asian counterparts, tipping in China can be seen as rude as well.
India
Tipping in India is not expected, but it is not seen as outright rude. Out of respect and modesty, a server may refuse the tip.
