If you have an interest in cycling, you most definitely heard of the Tour de France, and associate the country with pedal power. However, southern neighbor Spain also has an impressive cycling heritage, with the Vuelta de Espana ranked the third most prestigious road race in the world. As a result, there are plenty of iconic rides for you to check out.
While numerous companies offer guided tours, the best way to see the country on a budget is a self-guided trip. Armed with a decent map, there is no reason why you can’t go it alone.
Some of the most popular rides take in the iconic mountain climbs. One route moves along the northern coast from Bilbao in the Basque Country to Asturias, hitting peaks such as Picos de Europa and Angliru, part of the Vuelta. These rides are recommended for more experienced cyclists.
For something a little more relaxed, head to the southern province of Andalucia. The weather is temperate year-round, but it’s best to avoid the searing heat of summer. There is a variety of terrain to explore, from flatter coastal roads to the mountainous Sierra Nevada, and you can stop in on beautiful historical cities of Seville and Granada.
Spanish drivers are generally respectful of cyclists and the country has a great number of attractive cycle routes. The country remains a relatively affordable place to travel, but you can also take your own tent if you feel like saving the pennies on a more rugged adventure.
Take out that map and get planning!
