Destinations / Middle East

Saudi Red Sea is home to some of the world’s most stunning, untouched coral reefs and marine biodiversity, making it the perfect destination for scuba diving. Travelers can discover more than 1,200 species of marine creatures, including 15 percent of rare fish species, as well as more than 500 diving spots and historic shipwrecks.

If this sounds like an adventure for you, here are some must-do dives, must-visit sights and unique marine life to keep an eye out for:

Shipwrecks

  • The Cable Wreck: In the 19th century, this British cable-laying ship sank near Abu Tair Island. Since then, it has been encrusted with corals and transformed into a thriving artificial reef. Both beginner and experienced divers are encouraged to explore this shipwreck.
  • Ann Ann Wreck: Now home to schools of snapper, barracuda and jacks, this intact cargo ship sits near Abu Faramish area and welcomes divers to explore its remains.
  • Boiler Wreck: Remains of an old steamship are scattered around the reefs around Farasan Banks. Divers can catch glimpses of pelagic swimming around the reefs and remains.

Unique Marine Life

  • Red Sea Anthias: Keep an eye out for these flame-colored, striped fish. Red Sea Anthias are unique to the region and can be found in colorful swarms around Ras Mohammed National Park and Strait of Tiran.
  • Whale Sharks: If you are visiting Saudi Red Sea between February and May, you might spot whale sharks feeding by the surface in Jabal Al-Lith Island.
  • Sea Turtles: See how many different species of sea turtles you can spot throughout the trip. Five of the seven species can be seen around the Four Sister Islands and Umluj.
