Known as the Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, Montgomery, Alabama, celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King and his contributions to history year-round, but especially today. To commemorate Martin Luther King Day, the city held a series of events this weekend, including jazz and lyric music, a family-friendly Unity Day, oratorical contests and more. Travelers to Montgomery any time of the year can enjoy an immersive and transformational journey honoring Dr. King.

The holiday weekend kicked off with the Young People’s Town Hall at Rosa Parks Museum on Thursday and Friday, where millennial and Gen Z leaders engaged attendees on the topics of inclusion and equity, alongside student speakers who shared their social justice vision of the future at the Annual Oratorical Contest. Other weekend events included a Jazz and Lyric Celebration, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and the MLK Birthday Bash.

Year-round, travelers can visit many experiences that offer insight into the city’s history, from Dexter Avenue Baptist Memorial Church, where Dr. King first came into his Civil Rights leadership role, to Rosa Parks Museum and Equal Justice Initiative’s Legacy Sites.
