Tips / Travel

When the New Year arrives and cold weather hits, it can be tempting to book a vacation to warmer temperatures and sunnier locales. If a jaunt across the pond is in your future come January, consider the following destinations where the dollar can be stretched well into 2017.

Malta

Located off the southern coast of Sicily, this often-overlooked island is becoming more intriguing, especially among winter travelers. Temperatures can reach up to 60 degrees Fahrenheit during the day.

Andalusia

Andalusia is considered one of the warmest regions in continental Europe and is home to the stunning architectural marvel known as the Alhambra (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site). Located within viewing distance of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, skiing is also a familiar pastime in the region of flamenco and tapas.

Canary Islands

These Spanish islands are located off the west coast of Morocco and serve as popular getaways for northern Europeans. Hike and bike among the stunning scenery and enjoy the island life while the rest of the continent shivers.

The Alps

Traveling to another just-as-cold location may seem nonsensical, but an exception can be made for the Alps. Whether you approach this picturesque mountain range from Germany, Switzerland, Austria or Italy (or all four), take advantage of the glittering slopes and après-ski lifestyle that can’t be found in the United States.

Massive Resort Planned for Florida’s Forgotten Coast

Known as Florida’s Forgotten Coast, this stretch of the Florida Panhandle is often overlooked for more well-known destinations in the state, such as Panama City Beach, Miami and Tampa. But the region’s quiet and laid-back atmosphere slowly draws travelers wishing to escape the crowds and high prices of Florida’s other cities, and one hospitality brand just announced plans to bring a 55-acre resort and community to the area.
