In the tobacco world, Cuba is something of a mythical destination. Famous for having the best tobacco and cigars in the world, it’s top of the list of places to visit for people who love a good smoke.
Part of the attraction, at least in the United States, is Cuban cigars have traditionally been difficult to buy. Due to the trade embargo, getting Cuban cigars to the United States involved making a trip to the island, officially impossible for U.S. citizens for decades.
Cuban tobacco is grown largely in the Viñales valley, a beautiful area around three hours west of Havana by car. It’s a popular destination for tourists, thanks not only to the cigars, but also to the amazing limestone karst formations that make for a great setting.
Make the trip here and you can see how cigars are made, from the plants in the field to the drying shed and the rolling workshop. Pick up some local smokes, too, if you like a bargain; they’re far cheaper here than in Havana.
That said, you need to buy from a trusted source because there are lots of fake cigars around. It seems like every second person knows someone who works in a factory, but it’s one of the biggest scams in Cuba. Buy from an official dealer if you want to be sure you’re getting the real stuff!
