If you’ve ever visited San Luis Obispo County along California’s Central Coast, you know the beautiful landscape is magical. At Light at Sensorio, an immersive art exhibit in Paso Robles, visitors can experience that magic among a setting of multi-colored light displays that pair the gently rolling hills of wine country with light, sound and nature.
The multi-acre attraction, which features unique light creations from “The Light Artist” Bruce Munro, first opened in 2019 but was updated earlier this year with new exhibits. Using a variety of mediums to create fields of colorful light set against the night sky, Munro’s work creates an ethereal wonderland for visitors.
The original installations include Field of Light, a display of nearly 100,000 fiber optic bulbs, creating the effect of colorfully blooming flowers. Light Towers, another original installation, is an exhibit deeply connected with Paso Robles itself. Sixty-nine towers crafted from 17,000 wine bottles create a mesmerizing display that changes color in tune with a musical score. This year’s new additions include Fireflies, consisting of nearly 10,000 flickering lights, and Gone Fishing, the artist’s rendition of what it is like standing by a stream represented by colorful lights.
To experience Sensorio, you can purchase a general admission ticket and grab a bite to eat and a glass of wine to enjoy while you wander the exhibits at your leisure listening to live music, or you can purchase a terrace experience and get exclusive access to a private seating area with incredible views of the light show.
This year’s new additions are just part of the long-range plan for Sensorio, which includes a hotel and convention center along with more art exhibits. For the remainder of 2023, the experience is available for visitors every Thursday–Sunday evening. Beginning in 2024, opening dates will shift to Monday–Saturday during the first week of January, 2024, before changing to Thursday–Saturday.
