If someone tells you there’s a Switzerland of America, where would you think it’s located? You probably wouldn’t guess Colorado. However, Ouray is a small region in the state often overlooked in lieu of other popular destinations such as Denver and Aspen.
Located within the San Juan Mountains, the area known as Ouray was once home for nomadic Native Americans before it saw settlers from the East. As miners made their way westward and Native Americans were forced to give up their land, the region now bills itself as a tourist destination, and tourism is one of its main sources of revenue.
Its reputation as the Switzerland of America comes from its geological formations, though, rather than its heritage. The narrow valley is enclosed by steep mountains, perfect for winter sports, and it just happens to be the ice-climbing capital of the United States.
There’s more than just sports, of course. Ouray County produces more craft beer and spirits per capita in the state of Colorado than any other region. The region’s other favorites? Coffee and chocolate. You’ll also find plenty of sulfur-free hot springs, in both public and private facilities.
The outdoor activities are where the region really shines, though. From ATV rentals and biking to hiking and hot air balloon rides, the summer activities are just as plentiful as the winter options. There are several popular trails and each offers scenic views, perfect for some great travel photography.
