Trends / Adventure

Tayrona National Park was established in 1864 and is home to some of Colombia’s most beautiful natural wonders and indigenous cultures. The Tayrona tribe lived in the region for more than 2,000 years and was the one who established the country’s famed Lost City.

The 58-square-mile park is relatively small but still contains an assorted array of ecological diversity. Inside you’ll find tropical rainforests, arid brush forests and cloud forests hidden atop the mountain ranges. The park also houses more than 400 species of birds, more than 30 species of reptiles, several species of monkeys and more than 200 types of sponges.

Tayrona’s most beautiful attractions are its miles of pristine, sandy white beaches and crystal-clear waters. The area is popular among sunbathers and surfers alike, though you won’t find many giant waves here. Getting to the beaches is the real struggle. Tayrona is mostly untamed wilderness far away from the city. Vans are available at the entrance to the park, but they’ll only take you a few miles before the road ends. From there, it’s at least an hour’s walk before you’ll arrive at the available camping spots and cabins.

As one of Colombia’s most rugged and untouched parks, Tayrona is a must-visit for any traveler exploring the region.
