The Balkan coast has gotten a lot of travel buzz as of late, attracting both cruise ship passengers and backpackers seeking alternative destinations from other mainland European hotspots. The formerly war-torn region has welcomed curious visitors with open arms, but as crowds come by the boatload, some of the area’s most easily accessible spots (e.g., the Bay of Kotor) are becoming oversaturated. But the Balkans have much more to offer than sunny coastlines and old-world walled cities, and the area deserves to be seen further inland, where the relatively new nations thrive in their own way.
Knowing where to begin this exploration can be questionable, but that’s where Meanderbug comes in. The small adventure and agritourism company connects tourists with locals by offering unique, eco-friendly experiences for travelers, from zip-lining across Europe’s largest canyon to spending the night in a farm house and living off the land.
Each experience is tailored with the traveler’s interest in mind, and all are completely hosted and operated by native Balkans who are experts in the land and culture.
Interested travelers can browse Meanderbug’s website by location (Montenegro, Albania) or by housing type (camping, cabins, rooms or katuns, Montenegrin huts) and can also choose to add on home-cooked meals or a foraging expedition. Meanderbug also hosts inclusive adventure packs, which are multiday excursions for hiking, fly fishing, climbing or backcountry skiing from hut to hut.
Meanderbug’s environmentally friendly experiences help locals promote their services, create jobs and bring together communities and cultures in a sustainable way.
