For most people, travel means disconnecting for at least a little while. For others, waiting to get back to the hotel room just doesn’t cut it. Check out one of these mobile hotspots if you need to stay connected.

Karma Go or Keepgo

The pay-as-you-go option like Karma Go and Keepgo is suitable for most travelers, allowing you to refill your data as you need since most airports, hotels and cafes will offer a WiFi connection. The going rate is around 1GB for $10, with discounts for higher data packages.

Verizon Jetpack or AT&T Velocity

Your current wireless provider might have an option to include a mobile hotspot. Keep in mind usage will eat into your monthly data allotment, so transferring large files might bring you instant overage charges. That said, Verizon and AT&T have two of the best hotspots available with 20 hours of battery life allowing up to 15 devices at a time.

Skyroam or Tep Wireless

Certain travelers might need an internet connection 24/7, making cell providers and pay-as-you-go quite expensive as you rack up data. Skyroam and Tep Wireless offer a flat rate for 24 hours of unlimited internet access, costing around $8–10 a day.

Smartphone

Many smartphone contracts offer tethering, allowing you to use your phone as a hotspot, though like the Jetpack and Velocity, it will eat into your data. For the best signal, connect your phone to the USB port so it doesn’t slow down under a Bluetooth connection.

Ground Control MCD-4800

If you’re in a remote area or the middle of the ocean, LTE just isn’t going to cut it. The MCD-4800 receives a signal from three Broadband Global Area Network satellites, allowing you to connect from anywhere in the world (except Antarctica).
