First Friday, Philadelphia

In the historic Old City of Philadelphia, as the first week of each month nears its end, artists and art lovers from across the region come to take part in the cultural celebration known as First Friday. This year-round event takes place from 5 to 9 p.m., in any weather.

At First Friday, more than 40 local art galleries open their doors and offer open houses for visitors to view their work. Many galleries offer complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres to enjoy as guests admire paintings, sculptures and even new media.

Outside, droves of attendees stroll casually across the quiet streets. Although this makes it difficult to navigate with a car, it creates a cozy, intimate atmosphere. On these streets, patrons can enjoy live music as it echoes against the old bricks of the colonial buildings, as well as more art that can be found on sidewalks as starving artists try to make a name for themselves selling prints, jewelry and handcrafted accessories.

For those looking to purchase art at First Friday, there is something for everyone — from a cheap print to a high-end, one-of-a-kind focal piece to hang above a fireplace. While many prints are overpriced, most artists are willing to negotiate prices.
