Although in direct competition with Europe’s highly popular high-speed trains and attractively affordable international flights within the continent, bus travel is nothing to dismiss when considering options for continental transit.
Since 2013, a German startup company called FlixBus has become Europe’s largest bus network, welcoming more than 100 million passengers on board since its inception. FlixBus perks include ticket prices as low as $6, free and fast WiFi and connections to 1,400 cities in 27 countries. The FlixBus app allows passengers to view their bus schedule in real time and plan for any delays or disruptions, as well as share their route and location with loved ones.
The efficiency and affordability of this success story will soon hit the roads of the United States, thus serving as a potential competitor for other players in the low-cost bus game, such as Megabus and Greyhound’s subsidiary BoltBus. Bus travel has grown in popularity in recent years due to rising prices of domestic train and plane travel.
To start, FlixBus will introduce its first fleet of buses in Southern California and neighboring states in the Southwest region of the country, with headquarters in Los Angeles. As an environmentally friendly company, FlixBus will continue to employ green technology to power its buses.
