While children under three months are often not mature enough to handle long-distance travel, older babies are often fair game. For a parent of one of these infants, keeping your child calm can be a tough task. It is important to know the tricks of suppressing your baby’s mood, for the sake of you and everyone else on board.
Liquids
While the TSA has guidelines restricting the presence of containers of liquids more than 3.4 ounces in carry-on luggage, other liquids like baby formula, breast milk and juice is generally exempt. Just make sure to inform the officers of these liquids before making your way through the security checkpoint.
Popping Ears
Nobody likes their ears popping due to the increased altitude, especially infants. The best course of action for the parent of a post-ear-pop baby is to keep him or her preoccupied. Breastfeeding or sipping on formula is the most direct way to accomplish this.
Jetlag
It is a smart move to condition your child in advance — change his or her sleep schedule in the days leading up to the flight. It’s easier to combat a cranky baby on your home turf than in a crowded tin can 20,000 feet in the air.
