As a fan of food, I find myself drawn to Mexican cuisine, preferably authentic Mexican. Luckily for me, my neighborhood is home to an amazing Mexican restaurant, Fonda. Whether it’s for a relaxing, weekend brunch, a work happy hour or a romantic dinner, Fonda has become my go-to spot in the East Village.
As a frequent customer, I learned Fonda’s award-winning chef Roberto Santibanez was raised in Mexico City and trained at Paris’s renowned Le Cordon Bleu culinary school. Hence, the authenticity and high quality of Fonda’s cuisine. My favorite dish on the menu, is camarones adobados, Yucatan-style pan seared jumbo shrimp, served over spicy, creamy green rice and a black bean velvet sauce.
Of course this meal is not complete without Fonda’s fresh, homemade guacamole which is not only served with traditional chips, but also warm soft tortillas. Add a classic, margarita on the rocks with salt and you will be more than satisfied.
Fonda is open for dinner seven days a week and brunch on the weekends. Dinner entreesrange from about $17–25. If you’re more on a budget, you can take advantage of Fonda’s $6 happy hour menu, which includes appetizer and drink options. On Saturday or Sunday, the restaurant offers a $27 brunch, which includes choice of select entrees and free drink refills for one-and-a-half hours. Reservations are recommended, as it can get quite busy.
