Settled on a modest hillside in the middle of Tuscany is a centuries-old former military outpost that now welcomes guests to its peaceful setting, ripe with both history and wine.
Now, Fortezza di Pozzo is a modern holiday home with eight two-level rooms, each with a full kitchen, spacious dining and living areas, and an open-plan, second-story loft with guest beds and chests of drawers.
The property dates to the 700s and feels like a Tuscan home away from home. A rectangular swimming pool provides a refreshing respite on hot, sunny summer days, while a Jacuzzi keeps the nights hot and bubbly.
The immensely friendly and personable staff is available to cater to every need, from pouring hot, fresh espressos from behind the lobby coffee bar to arranging daytrips to nearby wineries, quaint Tuscan towns like Siena, Lucca and Pisa or larger cities like Florence.
Sample some of the area’s vintages at the osteria (on-site restaurant where the stables used to be) while casual concierge Fulvio fills you in on the history of the local village of Santa Maria a Monte.
With so much to see and do in the region, it will take no effort to fill your days with activities or simply laze on the sunlit patio with a glass of wine while soaking in the views of vineyards below.
