Located in eastern Berlin, Friedrichshain is still one of the most vibrant districts of the former East. Until recently it was known for its more affordable housing prices and there was even a squatting culture that remained from the 90s and the fall of communism.
Now that it is an up-and-coming neighborhood that finally arrived, there is still much to do and there is more tourism than there was even five years ago. Perfectly situated between the center of Berlin and the more residential districts of Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg, this neighborhood is known for its galleries, bars, theaters and food.
Check out the Urban Spree Art Gallery and sample the delicious pizza at Il Ritrovo – Cucina Casalinga Popolare located at Gabriel-Max Strasse 2 (be warned this is cash only). There is an excellent flea market on Saturdays at the Boxhagener Platz 1, where you will not only find food and vintage goods, but flowers and jewelry. Afterward, enjoy a drink at Silo Coffee.
Friedrichhain is the perfect home base from which to explore Berlin because of its fairly central location, so find an apartment through Airbnb and take in all it has to offer.
