The opera is far too easy to overlook as a source of joy to millions around the world and its “stadiums” are often the most beautiful places on earth and a testament to the genius of architecture when done well.

In addition to presenting a grandiose vision of class and timelessness, opera houses are built to allow unamplified voices to rise sufficiently so that those in the “cheap seats” don’t miss out on the drama unfolding on the stage. Opera houses need to be built in a manner by which at 150 meters you can hear the whispers build to a crescendo.

Whether you’re in Vienna, Paris, Bogotá or Buenos Aires, opera is a must if only a once-in-your-lifetime occasion. You should really be prepared.

Whether it’s between Memorial Day and Labor Day or not, you should never go to a funeral in white pants. Working with that understanding, you should never attend the opera in jeans. While you may be granted entry you will be frowned upon by all those with whom you come in contact.

Opera is for pageantry and for men a tux is a safe bet to match the flowing gown of the woman on your arm. Spending $100 to rent said tux and gown for the evening is worth every penny.

You don’t need opera glasses, as they are an affectation on a good day and most opera houses wow even from afar. That said, you should do a bit of background research on what it is you’re to see. It’s likely you won’t understand the language, but that’s no excuse for not knowing the story ahead of time.
