Adults who dream of having their own night at the museum experience may have the opportunity to take part in such a magical experience in the coming years in Sydney, Australia. During the summer of 2016, the Sydney Opera House kept its doors open after hours for an adult sleepover, accompanied by eight hours of soothing music. Guests were allowed to explore the interior of the museum and if they chose to sleep, could rest on provided sleeping cots. Building upon the success of this venture, the Opera House submitted a proposal to continue the event at various times throughout the year, making different areas of the facility available to guests.
The purpose of these opera overnights is to encourage the general public to engage more with the culture and history of Sydney’s beloved monument and testament to the performing arts. Overnighters will have access to areas of the entertainment complex they may not be able to visit during the normal operating hours or when they visit to see an actual performance.
The Sydney Opera House Trust hopes to draw visitors and locals alike to these unique nights of musical sleep, especially before part of the building temporarily shuts down in 2019 to undergo massive renovations. The upgrade will be the biggest the Opera House has experienced since opening in 1973. During the 18-month reconstruction period, work will begin on a new concert hall and the Sutherland Theater will be closed. The rest of the opera house will remain open.
