Destinations / Latin America

Travelers looking for a quick escape should check out Punta de Montañita, just three hours from Guayaquil along Ecuador’s Pacific Coast. This destination was recently named one of Ecuador’s “Rincones Mágicos,” or Magical Spots, joining the exclusive list of hidden gems in the equatorial nation. The coastal community is best known for its amazing surfing; fresh seafood; and unforgettable mix of adventure, culture and scenery.

Scenic Activities

Punta de Montañita, also known as the Surfing Capital of Ecuador, offers unique surfer culture, natural beauty and surf town charm. Participate in surfing, yoga, wildlife spotting, beachside cooking classes, surfboard making and more outdoor adventures. After a day of fun, stop by one of the many beach clubs to experience the town’s party culture with a few cold ones.

Coastal Cuisine

Chow down on a variety of coastal specialties, including fresh grilled shrimp, breaded squid and garlic-infused octopus. Beachside cevicherías, or restaurants selling ceviche, sell a variety of fresh ceviche with oysters, shellfish, shrimp and octopus. For a traditional dish, try encebollado, a flavorful fish broth with yuca and pickled red onion.

Immersive Experiences

Beyond surfing, take a trip to the nearby community of Dos Mangas to learn about toquilla straw hat weaving and explore the rain forest on a guided horseback tour through eco trails.
