Trends / History

Germany played an important role in many of the most emblematic events of recent history, and visitors will find historical references at every turn.

Everyone who goes to the German capital of Berlin will be struck by the history of the place. The Berlin Wall is commemorated around the city, and significant landmarks such as Checkpoint Charlie are still in place. The old Tempelhof Airport, used to bring in supplies to West Berlin during the blockade, is now a popular place to cycle and sunbathe during the summer.

The former East German cities of Leipzig and Dresden are popular places to visit, Allied bombing during WWII heavily damaged both. Visit the cities today to see how they have regenerated since the fall of the wall.

Those with an interest in older history should make the trip to Wurzburg, near Frankfurt in the west of the country. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a Baroque castle and a 1000-year-long history. Other top cities to visit include Koblenz, a city whose strategic position at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers made it subject to many battles, and the 800-year-old seaside city of Rostock on the Baltic Sea.
