Trends / History

The colonial city of Trinidad is a gem in Cuba’s crown, attracting huge numbers of visitors per year.

Part of the attraction are its cobbled streets and colonial architecture, which lend the UNESCO World Heritage site a mysterious air. Another factor is its proximity to the beaches, especially Playa Ancon, and easy access from the Cuban capital, Havana.

Once you’re there, you’ll be spoiled for choice of things to do. Explore the historic center of town, head to the beach for the day or take a hike up to the viewpoint at the radio tower. From here you can look down over the city, the coast and the Valle de los Ingenios.

The latter is worth a visit in its own right. It’s an easy daytrip from Trinidad and you’ll be able to visit the huge sugar plantations that used to be home to thousands of slaves. It’s a harrowing part of the island’s history, but one that is important to understand.

Another good daytrip is a visit to the Topes de Collantes National Park. It’s full of impressive waterfalls and trails, plus you’ll get a feel for the tropical environment that surrounds Trinidad.

Once you’re back in the center of town, enjoy the myriad bars and restaurants that popped up to serve the tourist industry, and dance the night away at the al fresco Casa de la Musica.
