Spend the holiday season in South Dakota.

Book at stay at Spearfish Canyon Lodge. This resort offers a variety of seasonal deals, including a snowshoe adventure package. Black Hills National Forest invites visitors to forage for their own Christmas tree. Now through Dec. 31, visitors may cut down a ponderosa pine, spruce or juniper tree after securing a $10 permit.

South Dakota’s capital city of Pierre hosts an annual Christmas at the Capitol celebration. More than 100 decorated trees line the halls of the Capitol Building. Special performances by groups from around South Dakota take place daily. This event runs through Christmas Day.

Go back in time for a 19th-century experience at Frontier Christmas. Held at Fort Sisseton State Park, this experience features hands-on activities, historic reenactments, caroling, sleigh rides and chestnut roasting. The event will be held Dec. 14.

Deadwood hosts an array of holiday experiences, culminating in its annual Christmas in Deadwood. The holiday celebration takes place Dec. 22–28.

Beyond festive activities, South Dakota offers travelers thrilling winter experiences. The state boasts popular snowmobiling trails, with the season starting in mid-December. Head to Terry Peak for excellent skiing opportunities for beginners and experts alike.
