The famed Hotel Ritz Madrid is getting a massive make-over that will carry a multimillion dollar price tag. The 108-year-old property shuttered Feb. 28, for restorations that will cost around $121 million dollars. The property will reopen late next year.

The hotel was one of the original European hotels to open under world-class hotelier Cesar Ritz, whose brand became synonymous with top-notch service and luxury.

Spanish architect Rafael de La-Hoz leads the project with French designers Gilles and Boissier. The makeover will include facility upgrades but the Belle Époque-era style of the original building will remain. The main lounge’s glass roof will be restored, and the 153 rooms will be refreshed with crystal chandeliers, antique paintings and sculptures receiving restorations. The hotel’s main restaurant will move back to the terrace garden, and a new bar will be installed.

A one-of-a-kind 2,000-square-foot Royal Suite with Spanish touches will be built, with views of the Prado Museum. There will also be a new fitness center, indoor pool and spa offerings.

The hotel hosted dignitaries and royalty like Prince Rainier of Monaco and Princess Grace, who honeymooned there.

“For more than 100 years, The Ritz has been an icon in this vibrant city,” said James Riley, group chief executive, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. “This extensive restoration, combined with Mandarin Oriental’s exemplary service, is targeted to ensure the property retains its legendary status as one of the world’s great hotels. We intend to make the local community even more proud of this historic landmark when we welcome them again upon re-opening.”
