Legroom in airplanes has never been one of the selling points of travel and has only shrunk over the decades. The Telegraph reports passengers have lost up to eight inches of legroom since air travel went mainstream. Unfortunately, there’s no indication airlines have plans to remedy that issue short of charging travelers for coveted space.
Short of splurging on pricey first-class seats, there’s not much you can do to increase your legroom. However, you can employ a few tips to make that cramped airplane feel as comfortable as possible.
Choose Your Row Wisely
Although most airlines force passengers to pay up if they want to choose their seat in advance, it may be worth the extra charge. Opt for seats in bulkhead or exit rows to ensure the roomiest row available. You could end up with precious extra inches to stretch your legs and leave more room for your luggage.
Consider Seat Selection
Just like row selection, choosing an ideal seat can dramatically improve your flight. Aisle seats leave more flexibility to stretch out your legs for a few minutes or hop up for a quick walk to the lavatory before the drink cart comes out.
However, if you’re traveling with a companion, consider booking the aisle and window seat. Middle seats are often the last to fill and may just sit empty, giving you and your companion extra room. If someone shows up for that middle seat, you can always move over to stay together.
Ditch the Luggage
Luggage under your seat can add to the feeling of claustrophobia with no place to put your feet. Bring along a small backpack and leave bulkier luggage overhead or check it at the gate. That freeing sensation of not dealing with bulky baggage can also leave you feeling more comfortable throughout your travels.
Bring Creature Comforts
Sometimes there’s absolutely nothing you can do to feel more physically comfortable on a flight. Instead, focus on creature comforts from your favorite snacks to earbuds and a pillow. The more you can relax and lose focus on the cramped space around you, the more comfortable you’ll feel.
